Cameroon and Ajax Amsterdam goalkeeper Andre Onana, has played his first competitive game in over nine months as Cameroon defeated Malawi 4-0.
Onana was a surprising pick at goal by coach Antonio Conceiçao in Cameroon’s game against The Flames of Malawi, counting for day five of the Group D of the 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifiers
Hitherto number one, Devis Epassy was dropped to the bench, as the highly rated Onana looks set to taking back his position, just 57 days to the African Nations Cup on home soil.
A well worked Moumi Ngamaleu effort from the right, saw him picking out captain Vincent Aboubakar in the Flames’ box.
This was when, Aboubakar’s goal bound efforts was saved on the goal line by the hand of John Banda after Ngamaleu had completely dealt with goalkeeper, Brighton Munthali.
A red card to Banda and a resulting penalty saw Vincent Aboubakar putting the lions in front at the 23rd minute.
There was little work for Onana to do throughout the first half, as he was well shielded by Michael Ngadeu and Jean Claude Billong, Nohou Tolo and Olivier Mbaizo from the flanks.
Three minutes before the break, Ngamaleu again set up Zambo Anguissa, who increased Cameroon’s lead.
Probably one of the quiet games Onana has had between the sticks, as Malawi failed to register a single shot on target.
Before the game against Malawi, Onana only made the bench for Ajax Amsterdam in their zero all draw against Go Ahead Eagles on Sunday, November 07.
With 90 minutes in the tank, the la Masía graduate will be looking forward to keeping his place against Ivory Coast on Tuesday in Douala.
