Napoli and Nigerian forward Victor Osimhen has been ruled out of action for three months after undergoing surgery on his cheekbone and eye socket, implying he will miss the January 2022 AFCON in Cameroon.
Serie A leaders Napoli disclosed the devastating news in a statement released on their official website on Tuesday.
“On Tuesday morning, Victor Osimhen was operated on his cheekbone and eye socket by Gianpaolo Tartaro, who was assisted by Dr Mario Santagata with Dr Raffaele Canonico also present,” partly read the statement.
“The player is doing well and will remain under observation for the next few days,” it added on a lighter note.
“Osimhen is expected to return to action in three months,” the release concluded.
So far this season, the 22-year-old has been in red-hot form, scoring nine goals and providing two assists in fourteen games in all competitions.
He has scored five Serie A goals and four more in the Europa League for Napoli this season, and Osimhen netted four times in six games to help Nigeria reach Africa’s World Cup play-offs next March.
He also finished as joint-top scorer in qualifying for the delayed Nations Cup, with five goals.
The coveted CAF tournament will run from 9th January to 6th February 2022.
