With five goals already in four games this season, it is safe to say that Steven Mukwala is proving the most consistent goal scorer in the Uganda Premier League. This, compared to how he has been performing the previous two seasons ratifies the claim.
The 22 year old bagged a quadruple as his side, URA FC washed away Tooro United 6-1 on Tuesday showing early signs of what should be expected of him this campaign.
Any evaluation of Mukwala’s potential, however, should start in the 2019/20 season. That season marked the start to a consistent journey of scoring plenty of goals and has continuously improved as well.
He was then on loan at Maroons FC from Vipers SC, netting 13 league goals and finishing as the UPL’s top scorer despite his team being relegated.
The Uganda Cranes forward was not considered by his parent club Vipers the next season who released him and that is how he joined his current club.
In his debut season at URA, he again managed double figures but this time around improved his 2019/20 tally by a goal when he scored 14 league goals in the 2020/21 season.
He did not win the golden boot at the time but finished third only one behind Express’ Eric Kambale and two off the eventual winner of the gong Yunus Sentamu who scored 16 goals.
In total, he scored 27 goals in 51 matches, the highest of any other player in the UPL during the previous two-year period.
After four games, Mukwala is ahead of everyone that was on top of him by the end of the last term with only Sentamu coming closest with four goals. The latter netted all his four in one game when Vipers thrashed Wakiso Giants 5-1.
By scoring four goals in one game, it’s an indication that both Mukwala and Sentamu are reliable sources of goals and could be involved in a tight race for this season’s golden boot.
However, whichever team is capable of scoring more goals will be a strong factor but so far, that favours Mukwala given that URA have scored the most number of goals in the league.
URA have managed 13 goals and that is the best tally in the league so far despite playing two games less than most of the teams while Vipers have managed 12 in five games.
