Upon declaration of the final three candidates for the Airtel Male Player of year award by FUFA on Wednesday, a section of the local football faithful were thrown in a frenzy after realizing Yunus Sentamu had missed the cut.
The 2020/21 StarTimes Uganda Premier League topscorer (with 16 goals) and 2021 Stanbic Uganda Cup winner was dropped, but rather shockingly by the FUFA awards organizing committee.
The shortlist for the final three comprises teammates Bobosi Byaruhanga and Aziz Kayondo along with Express FC forward Erick Kenzo Kambale.
The FUFA Head of Communications Ahmed Hussein has since come out to throw light on why the prolific marksman will not make the 2021 podium.
“After announcing the candidates for the best of the year award, there are things we have to do in terms of content creation; the videos, audios and interviews but that did not happen with Sentamu,” Hussein told Sanyuka Television.
“It is true he was among the final three candidates but despite communicating to his club (Vipers SC) through their Communications Department, they did not avail the player,” he added.
“The Federation went ahead and reached out to the player himself but he did not show up or communicate. We therefore decided to take up another player in the pecking order, according to merit, to take up his position.”
The winner of the coveted gong who will also drive home with a brand new car will be crowned on December 4 at the Speke Resort Hotel, Munyonyo at the awards gala.
