Former Police FC goalkeeper Derrick Ochan marked his KCCA debut with a clean sheet as he helped his side gain all three points on the road against Arua Hill at Barifa Stadium.
Ochan was in September ideally brought to Lugogo as a direct Charles Lukwago replacement, for the former KCCA captain’s move to Ethiopian side St.George was eminent at the time.
However, upon the return of veteran custodian Benjamin Ochan to KCCA, he assumed the captaincy role and the number one spot in goal.
The KCCA captain’s wide experience must have given him the edge to be repeatedly selected to keep KCCA’s goal for the opening six games of the season, in which he also managed to keep three cleansheets.
For Ochan (Derrick), it has been after six league games that he has been considered to start in-between the KCCA goalposts, and he insists it has not come late.
“I was confident that my time would come,” the goalkeeper exclusively told Football256 after KCCA’s 1-0 win in Arua.
“My job is to work hard in training, to keep in good mental and physical shape, and the selection part is for the coaches.”
“It is not as easy as it looks to start in the KCCA goal,” Ochan admitted, plainly noting the immense quality as regards the Lugogo side’s goalkeeping department.
Besides youngster Ali Mwirusi, Ochan has to compete with his captain for the KCCA number one spot, and he concedes it is such a big fight, but worth it.
“Before anything like competition, respect comes first. I hold the captain (Benjamin Ochan) in very high regard because he is a senior player who deserves all the respect.”
“But if we are three goalkepers, all of us can not start at once, so we have to compete as we also most importantly guide each other in training.”
“We all work hard because no one wants to sit on the bench, I guess we all want to be on the field playing football and trying to win games for the team.”
“Ours is a friendly rivalry, the kind of motivation that gets each one of us working even harder everyday,” Ochan summed it all up.
The goalkeper is of an impression that anyone who wants a starting place in football should fight for it.
The KCCA goalkeeping department has done a tremendous job with the help of their backline to see that the Lugogo side stays top of the table at 19 points.
Derrick Ochan and Benjamin Ochan have now combined for four KCCA clean sheets in seven UPL games.
