SUPL: Inconsistent Villa knocked down by Ankole Lions

By Allan Damba

SC Villa suffered their third defeat of the season after they lost 1-0 to Mbarara City FC in the StarTimes Uganda Premier League at the Kakyeka Stadium on Tuesday.

Solomon Okwalinga’s goal in the fourth minute granted the Ankole Lions maximum points but also ended their four game winless streak.

In the cagey affair, it’s the hosts who came closest to adding to their account in the 53rd minute, but substitute Henry Kitegenyi’s shot after a good run being denied by Meddie Kibirige’s strong hand.

The guests, on sensing the game was running out of their hands, started piling more pressure and could have scored in the 63rd minute but Isaac Ogwang’s shot was defended well by Jude Ssemugabi who at the moment, had assumed defensive duties.

The home team nearly extended the lead in the 75th minute but Hillary Mukundane’s freekick sailed only a few inches wide.

This was a clear show of inconsistency for the record league champions as they had come from behind to beat Onduparaka FC 2-1 in their previous match on Friday. It’s now three losses, two wins and a stalemate for them this season.

The result implies Villa are yet to pick a victory against Mbarara at Kakyeka, the win being the third in successive matches against the Jogoo on the ground.

Mbarara City are now ninth on the log with ten points and will be guests in Wankulukuku at Express FC in their encounter on December 7.

On the same day, 13th placed Villa who have stayed on seven points host URA FC in what should be a mouthwatering showdown.
