SUPL: Vipers bounce back to reclaim second spot after win over Gaddafi

By Allan Damba

Three days after losing 2-0 to URA FC, four time league champions Vipers SC returned with a big 3-1 win against Gaddafi FC in the StarTimes Uganda Premier League on Wednesday at the Gaddafi Arena.

A first half blitz witnessed four goals with three for the guests and a consolation for the hosts.

Milton Karisa popped up with a brace whereas Bright Anukani headlined the half with a freekick. Jamaldine Buchochera scored for Gaddafi on the other hand.

It is the home team that nearly got the early goal, in the fifth minute and 15th minute, Paul Willa and goalkeeper Fabien Mutombora denied Joel Madondo and James Otim respectively.

A minute after the half hour mark, Karisa raced clear after being set through by Cesar Manzoki’s headed pass and chipped the ball over custodian Ronald Mutebi.

Six minutes later, Buchochera equalized with a great strike passed Mutombora to give the visitors a scare.

Two minutes after, Karisa got the visitors back into the lead after another cheeky headed ball from Manzoki.

A minute to the end of the half, Anukani through a headline freekick, stretched the lead beyond the home team’s reach and set Vipers to the evening’s victory.

In a quiet second half, Bobosi Byaruhanga came close to adding a fourth in the 63rd minute but he could only watch as his piercing shot sailed inches wide.

Six minutes to the 90, substitute Allan Kayiwa purposely drove forward and set up Anukani who showcased fancy footwork but could not match it with an even better shot, as it went wide.

The result implies Vipers is back to second with 16 points after seven matches. They are six adrift of leaders KCCA FC with the latter having played a game more. The two will face off at St Mary’s Stadium on Sunday in a mouthwatering showdown.

Meanwhile, Gaddafi have stuck in the 11th position and will visit Police FC on Tuesday in their next fixture.
