AFCON 2021: Man City’s Mahrez to lead Algeria once again

By Angu Lesley – Cameroon

Algerian Forward, Riyad Mahrez is set to captain his country once again at the 33rd edition of the TotalErnegies African Cup of Nations in Cameroon from January 9th to February 6th.

The 30-year old Manchester City professional guided the team to its second continental title in 2019 when Algeria became African champions, defeating Sénégal 1-0.

He was included in their selection ahead of the AFCON as they aim to retain the title.

Pep Guardiola will have to do without the 30-year-old for however long he is away, although Mahrez is at least the only member of his squad that will be absent for that time.

Algeria who are drawn in Group E will begin defending their title on January 11 against Sierra Leone before meeting Equatorial Guinea and Ivory Coast.

It is worth noting that, Qatar-based striker Baghdad Bounedjah who scored their winning goal against Senegal in 2019 is part of coach Djamel Belmadi’s 28 man selection for the 2021 Total Energies AFCON.
