African champions Algeria were held by a resilient Sierra Leone to register their first point at the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations on Tuesday at the Stade Japoma.

Upon the feat, Djamel Belmadi the Algerian coach has said that he was not satisfied with the Desert Foxes’ performance against Sierra Leone following the 0-0 surprise result.

Belmadi further said that they had a brave opponent in front of them who left little room for them to earn maximum points.

“As the game went on, Sierra Leone had more motivation and reduced spaces, in the second half, it is true we had more chances but we salute the performance of the opponent,” Belmadi said in a press conference after the tight game.

On the other hand, John Keister the Sierra Leone coach further praised his team for the display; “I am happy with the result even though we attacked this game to win.”

Keister noted that even though they were facing the reigning African champions who are a great side but they stuck to their strategy which worked.

“We have to fight and grow in this group. And since our arrival, we have been working to move forward. There is no point in having a great game today (this Tuesday) and letting the other games slip away.”

“It’s at the end of the tournament that we shall know if we are the surprise team. We take game after game,” Keister warned.

Until the end of the game, the Desert Foxes kept pushing the Sierra Leone side but goalkeeper Mohammed Nbalie Kamara remained strong and made up for his defence twice.

Sierra Leone had a brilliant first half with two scoring opportunities that striker Alhaji Kamara failed to put to bed.

The rest of the teams in Group E, Ivory Coast and Equatorial Guinea will square off on Wednesday in their opener.
