AFCON 2021: Comoros, join fellow debutants Gambia in history making fairytale

Comoros’ shocking 3-2 win over African giants Ghana on Tuesday, has finally paid off. The Les Coelacantes have joined fellow debutants Gambia in history making fairytales.

Both countries who are playing at the Africa Cup of Nations for the first time, have booked themselves slots in the Round of 16.

Comoros who finished third in Group C on three points are through as one of the best three third placed teams following Sierra Leone’s 1-0 loss to Equatorial Guinea in Group E on Thursday.

Comoros who only became a FIFA member in 2005, have booked a date with hosts Cameroon at Olembe Stadium on Monday, January 24.

Gambia confirmed their qualification after Sudan and Guinea Bissau lost to Egypt and Nigeria respectively in Group D on Wednesday.

Burkina Faso, Gabon, Nigeria, Senegal, Cape Verde, Equatorial Guinea, Guinea, Cameroon, Comoros, Ivory Coast, Egypt, Morocco and Malawi are the already qualified teams.
