St Lawrence University’s (SLAU) head coach Nnono Ssozi has stressed that their 2022 Pepsi University Football League tie with YMCA is a must-win if they are to catch up with leaders Makerere University in Group D.
The latter beat Mbarara University of Science and Technology (MUST) 2-0 on Wednesday to assume the top spot with six points, but, SLAU can reclaim it, after Friday’s game at the Buwambo Grounds.
“This is not going to be an easy game but it is a must-win for us if we are to keep pace with Makerere,” Ssozi spoke to the media on Thursday.
“YMCA is a very good team and every time we play, it’s always a close game. But this is a game we must win,” Ssozi emphasized.
Nonetheless, it should be an equally important game for the hosts as they look to bounce back from their 1-0 loss to Makerere, and, head coach Muhamad Ssembatya is aware of this fact.
“Unfortunately, we lost our first game and this is, therefore, a game we cannot afford to lose if we are to be serious about progressing to the next stage,” he noted.
“As you know, only the top team in the group is guaranteed a slot in the knockout stage and that is what we are aiming for,” Ssembatya added.
The home team has never beaten the guests in the history of this competition. In the previous five meetings, the former has only managed a single draw, with the latter, emerging victorious four times.
