Uganda returns to the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations after a 22-year absence but there is a bit of similarity between the 2000 and 2022 tournaments as far as the Crested Cranes are concerned.

Back then in 2000, the Crested Cranes were pitted in Group A, and it is exactly where they find themselves on their return.

However, this time around with different opponents, host Morocco, Burkina Faso, and Senegal.

In 2000 it was host South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Reunion were their group mates.

Besides being in Group A once again, the other notable similarity is that they are again in the same group with the host nation.

George Lutalo’s charges will be hoping to break the jinx and go past the group stages having finished third with four points in their maiden appearance.

To reach the 2022 tournament, Uganda was given a bye before their last qualification game against Kenya who withdrew.

Uganda is joined by Burundi as the only two teams that will represent the CECAFA region at the continent’s greatest Women’s football showpiece.

The final tournament will be held in Morocco starting on Saturday, July 2 to July 23, 2022.

The Falcons of Nigeria are not only the current champions but also the record winners with 11 titles to their name.
