AFCON 2023: Cranes’ campaign officially starts on Wednesday – Micho

By Brian Aheebwa

Uganda Cranes head coach Milutin ‘Micho’ Sredojevic has noted that his side’s 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualification campaign officially starts on Wednesday against Niger after a disappointing display against Algeria.

In the opening game, Micho’s charges were outclassed by African powerhouse Algeria in a 2-0 defeat at Stade de 5 Juillet in Algiers on Saturday.

“For us, the Africa Cup of Nations qualification campaign is starting on Wednesday against Niger,” Micho told the media before adding.

“The game against Algeria has been a good test of character for our team because this is not an easy place to come play.”

“Certain moments decided the game I believe, but, us missing a penalty against such an opposition was demoralizing to the players.”

“I have a personal belief that in football, if you do not win, at least you learn a lesson and we have learnt a lot and we shall improve against Niger,” he added.

Aissa Mandi and Youcef Belaili scored in the 28th and 80th minutes respectively for the Desert Foxes to start their qualification campaign with a comfortable home victory.

In the other game that was played on the same day, Niger and Tanzania drew 1-1 and that means Uganda is bottom of Group F after one round of fixtures.

The Cranes will be hoping to set the dice rolling when they host West African side Niger at St. Mary’s Stadium, Kitende on Wednesday.
