Uganda learnt its 2023 U20 Africa Cup of Nations groupmates at a draw that was conducted in Cairo, Egypt on Friday.

The Uganda Hippos were drawn in Group B alongside South Sudan, Congo, and the Central African Republic, opponents head coach Jackson Mayanja has termed ‘tricky’.

“We have been drawn into a very tricky group and I would have preferred to be in the same group as the likes of Senegal and Nigeria,” Mayanja told Football256 before adding.

“When you play against such teams, the players know from the word go that they are facing tough opponents and it becomes a bit easier.”

“People are seeing it as a seemingly easy group but when have seen such on several occasions when the so-called big teams fail to go out of such groups.”

“So for my case, I am taking our group as a very dangerous and serious group,” the former Uganda Cranes player added.

When the Hippos face South Sudan, it will be a repeat of the CECAFA Zone qualification final where the former edged the latter 2-1 in Sudan in November.

“South Sudan is a very good team forget that people speak about them as a small nation in football but their playing staff is not weak as people think, they are very good.”

“During the CECAFA tournament, they finished the group stage games while unbeaten and I expect them to perform well at AFCON,” Mayanja noted.

Uganda will appear as the highest-ranked nation depending on how each team performed at the previous AFCON where they reached the final before losing 2-0 to Ghana who did not qualify for the 2023 tourney.

“The team performed well in the last edition but the past is past and we currently have a very different team with different ambitions.”

“We are trying to build a new team with a new rhythm and new patterns of play using different players some of whom had never played together until the CECAFA tournament.”

“We want to first of all seal the World Cup position meaning we have to reach the semifinals and that is the most important thing and later see if we can negotiate for the AFCON trophy,” he concluded.

Besides Uganda’s Group B, there are two more groups A and C. Group A has hosts Egypt, Mozambique, Senegal, and Nigeria while Group C has Benin, Gambia, Tunisia, and Zambia.

At the tournament that will run between February 19th and March 11th, the semifinalists will qualify for the U20 FIFA World Cup in Indonesia later next year.
