CHAN 2023: Uganda, Mali locked in dull stalemate

By Allan Damba

Uganda Cranes managed a barren stalemate with West African powerhouse Mali in their third and last buildup match ahead of the African Nations Championships (CHAN).

The Sunday result followed Cranes’ earlier 2-2 and 1-1 draws against Sudan and Cameroon respectively, with head coach Milutin ‘Micho’ Sredojevic looking to prepare the side in the best way possible ahead of the finals in Algeria.

The friendly encounter in Tunisia under immense temperature levels, was a dull show from either side in the attacking sense, as both struggled to create goal scoring opportunities.

In the opening half, Micho’s charges were limited to a cagey display, diving into fouls, kicking the ball away from their defense as the West Africans dominated the ball, albeit, with little threat.

The Cranes returned in the second a bit more organized in attack, with substitute Frank Sebuufu managing the team’s only shot on target from distance, which was comfortably gathered by the opponent’s goalkeeper.

Cranes goalkeeper Nafian Alionzi and Jack Komakech were on holiday for the entire 90 minutes, as the opponents were just as blunt with the goal in sight.

Following the trio of preparation matches, Uganda is expected to connect to Algeria early, as they look forward to their first group game against Democratic Republic of Congo on January 14th.

Ivory Coast and Senegal as the other occupants provide Micho a complicated task of leading Uganda to the first ever knockout stages in the competition.

How Uganda lined up: Alionzi Nafian (GK/C), Ashraf Mandela, Isa Mubiru, Hillary Mukundane, Gift Fred, Youngman Marvin, Travis Mutyaba, Yiga Najib, Nelson Senkatuka, Titus Ssematimba, Moses Aliro.

Substitutions: Jack Komakech, James Begisa, Derrick Ndahiro, Kenneth Semakula, Geoffrey Wasswa, Moses Waiswa, Abdu Karim Watambala, Milton Karisa, Bright Anukani
