Express FC head coach Wasswa Bbosa was full of praise for his defenders following the Red Eagles’ 1-0 narrow victory over Wakiso Giants FC in the StarTimes Uganda Premier League at the Betway Muteesa II Stadium, Wankulukuku on Friday.
The defending champions registered their first home win this season, thanks to Erick Kambale’s 34th minute penalty.
Marshalled by skipper Enock Walusimbi, Murushid Juuko at the heart of defense, Deus Bukenya at right back and Sadiq Ssekyembe on the left, Express’s backline gave a good account of themselves against a stubborn Wakiso Giants offence.
The game decider came relatively early in the game and according to Bbosa, it was the work of the defenders to protect it, despite the forwards once again being so wasteful just as they have been since the start of the season.
“We defended really well against a team that has been in good scoring form and credit goes to the defenders,” Bbosa said after the game.
“We scored from penalty but we had a lot of opportunities in open play but we could not put them away, we shall keep on trying to improve on our finishing.”
“The most important thing is that we have won and moreso from home, this has been our first win at home and it gives us more confidence going forward,” Bbosa added.
In the same game, Express’ second choice goalkeeper Denis Otim made his first appearance this campaign and managed a clean sheet, a feat he is entirely proud of.
“It was a game against a tough opponent but we worked as a unit. The defence and midfield were active. We scored to collect maximum points and it is the same mentality we should carry into the next game,” Otim hailed his teammates.
“Individually, it was exciting to feature in such a game, it was my first this season and I managed to keep my first clean sheet as well and I am looking forward to more of the same,” he noted.
A win saw the seven time SUPL champions climb up to sixth on the 16 team log with 11 points and their next game is an away fixture against Onduparaka FC on Tuesday, November 30.
