When BUL FC and Wakiso Giants FC were top of the StarTimes Uganda Premier League table at different times respectively this season, it was always a question of whether they are genuine title contenders or not.

BUL, who were top of the standings after five games, were leapfrogged by Wakiso who were also brought down by KCCA FC on Friday.

And, it may well have been the end of the assumption that either the Oil Manufacturers or the Purple Sharks are genuine title contenders.

KCCA ascending to the top of the 15-team SUPL log tells the story of a genuine title race beginning as they have always competed for the holy grail season in, season out.

After the Kasasiro Boys climbed to the top of the standings on Friday after defeating Onduparaka FC 2-0, there was a chance for the reigning champions Vipers SC to leapfrog them when they visited Gaddafi Modern FC on Sunday.

Unfortunately, the Venoms lost the game 1-0 and remained in the third position with 20 points and two points and one adrift of leaders KCCA and Wakiso who are on 22 and 21 points respectively, although the latter have played a game more.

The Venom loss can be attributed as a brief slump as they’re known for opening successive lengthy winning runs.

In the past decade, KCCA and Vipers have grown to be title rivals and are in sight of each other after 10 games, an indication that a genuine title race is on.

The Lugogo based outfit boast of the fact that they were able to defeat the Kitende based side 1-0 when the two giants met earlier this season at Lugogo.

As KCCA have scored the most number of goals in the league so far, 18 on the other hand Vipers have conceded the least, three.

Morley Byekwaso’s charges and Roberto Oliveira’s coached team have lost the least number of game so far this season, two, joint with Wakiso, BUL and Soltilo Bright Stars FC.

For their next fixtures, Vipers will play first when they host Onduparaka, a side yet to win a game this season on Wednesday, December 7th and victory will take the former top of the standings with 23 points.

KCCA will then also play at home on Friday, December 9th against rivals Express FC who have lost four straight games.

After reaching at this point where there is going to be an exchange of positions between the two teams have always vied for the trophy, it is safer to say that a genuine title race is right upon us.
