Esperance forward Youcef Belaili was the hero as Algeria defeated Senegal 1-0 in their second straight win at the 2019 Total Africa Cup of Nations at June 30th Stadium on Thursday.
The win takes Algeria to six points and on top of Group C following their 2-0 win over Kenya in their opener on June 23rd.
Both sides seemed cautious and didn’t give away too much especially in the first half, although Senegal struggled to deal with Algeria’s counter attacks.
The moment that decided the game was in the 48th minute, off Algeria’s counter attack, Belaili found himself in yards of space there in Senegal’s defense territory, he made no mistake.
His powerful shot was never going to be stopped by Edouard Mendy in the Senegalese goal posts.
In some stages of the game, Zambian referee Janny Sikazwe struggled to make the right calls on either sides, much as the game never went out of his control.
Senegal were welcoming back Sadio Mane who missed their 2-0 win over Tanzania through suspension.
The Liverpool man struggled against the Algerian defense, while Sofiane Feghouli, Riyad Mahrez and Baghdad Bounedjah ran the show for the 1990 winners.
Algeria join Nigeria and Egypt as the only three teams to advance and all of them are yet to concede a goal.
Algeria will play Tanzania in their last group game while Senegal will be hoping to get back to winning ways against Kenya.
