AFCON 2019: Dominant Cameroon go past Guinea Bissau with ease

By Brian Aheebwa

Defending champions Cameroon started their 2019 Total Africa Cup of Nations with a convincing 2-0 win over Guinea Bissau in their group F opener at Ismailia stadium.

The result sent a clear signal to whoever wishes to dethrone them as kings of African football as they chase a fifth a title.

Goals by gigantic defender Yaya Banana in the 65th minute and Stephane Bahoken in the 70th saw the indomitable lions come up on top against the 2017 debutants Guinea Bissau.

Clarence Seedorf has built his side around building plays from the back, dominating possession, high movement plus mobility on the pitch.

Cameroon forced Guinea Bissau to fall back and close the gaps, which they did right for the first 45 minutes but Cameroon remained patient and on game plan.

Despite losing concentration, Guinea Bissau defended well in the first half, had good discipline off the ball and it paid off at half time with a goalless score line but were broken in second half.

Guinea Bissau also came closer to scoring a consolation goal when they hit the upright in the second half and also had their slim efforts denied by Cameroon number one short stopper Andre Onana.

Guinea Bissau defended in numbers that made them lack numbers going forward, centre forward Toni Silva was isolated and cut off of supply giving the opposition ease to retain the ball and create more chances.

Quality in the squad also gave Cameroon an upper hand, the likes of Jean-Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting, was too good for the opposition, his class was above everyone playing against them.

The fear factor of being defending champions also gave the indomitable lions an added advantage as they were so much respected by the opposition making them superior.

Cameroon are indeed the defending champions; they played close to perfection and knew exactly what they were doing.

With more two games to play in the group stages, Cameroon sent a clear message to its opponents that they are the defending champions not by chance but because they are one of the best footballing nations in Africa.

The indomitable lions will return to action on June 29th against fellow giants Ghana who drew 2-2 against Benin in group F.
