AFCON 2019: Egypt not under pressure ahead of South African tie

By Clive Kyazze

The Cairo International Stadium will be a sea of red for the fourth time at the 2019 Total Africa Cup of Nations when Egypt host South Africa at the round of 16 on Saturday night.

A tie that hosts will approach cautiously because of what is at stake, and the expectation of the 70,000 more fans in the stadium and the millions watching back home on television.

There pressure is there, but coach Javier Aguirre has downplayed it; “The pressure the players are facing is a normal thing. The tournament is held in Egypt and they are demanded to deliver the title.”

It’s the same that skipper Ahmed Elmohamady echoed on Friday morning as he responded to the Egyptian media that is as demanding as the fans.

“We are used to this kind of pressure because we are always required to win competitions that are held in our homeland.”

“The fans are the main factor for our group stages success and I thank them for their support. They are aware enough and need to be asked to continue backing the national team,” Elmohamady said.

About the tie on Saturday, Aguirre didn’t pay to much the attention to the fact that South Africa qualified as one of the four third placed team and had to rely on results else where to confirm their stay in the competition.

“The South Africa encounter will be very tough and won‘t be easy as claimed by some. They have very good players in all positions.”

“The Bafana Bafana have the advantage of being a disciplined team. The difficulty of the game lies in the fact it has to end with a winner and that’s why we will fight to advance to quarterfinals,” the Mexican coach added.

There were concerns that Egypt don’t score enough, after scoring five goals in the three group games they have played.

“We have no goalscoring crisis and the proof is that we scored five goals in three games. We are capable of scoring around five goals each game,” Aguirre emphasized.

Mohamed Salah and Elmohamady both scored in the 2-0 wins over Uganda and Zimbabwe while Mahmoud ‘Trezeguet’ Hassan scored the lone goal in the win against Zimbabwe.
