AFCON 2019: It’s about character – Omeruo

By Clive Kyazze

Defender Kenneth Omeruo, midfielder John Obi Mikel and striker Ahmed Musa are the only members of the Nigerian team at the 2019 Total Africa Cup of Nations who know everything about winning the title.

The trio played an integral role as Nigeria won the 2013 Nations Cup in South Africa, that experience has been vital for the team in Egypt as they try to win a fourth title.

Omeruo believes that at this stage of the competition, Nigeria is a totally different monster to deal with.

“With our seriousness, Nigeria is a very difficult side as well and we have recovered very well from our previous game and we are ready for it,” the defender said in the pre-match press conference.

“It’s about character and quality in our team, we have talents who in the next three years will be great players,” he added.

In Samuel Chikwueze, Nigeria have one for the future, in fact, they have 11 players in their 23-man squad all below the age of 23, some who also have international exposure at different age categories.

Omeruo owes the team’s performance so far to the technical team that pays a lot of attention to details not only with the team but also the opposition.

“We have a technical team that pays attention to detail, you are on the pitch and you know almost everything about your opponent.”

All that won’t matter though if Nigeria can’t go past the in-form team of the tournament, Algeria have scored a total of ten goals at the tournament and only conceded one, on the other hand, Nigeria have scored seven and conceded five.
