AFCON 2019: Lack of calmness costs Zimbabwe

By Brian Aheebwa

Africa’s greatest football showpiece got underway with hosts Egypt recording a slim 1-0 win over Zimbabwe at the Cairo international stadium on Friday.

Mohamoud Trezeguet’s brilliance gave Egypt a slight edge over the fearless and ambitious Zimbabwe as Mohammed Salah got tamed by the opposition.

Zimbabwe came into this game as underdogs but pulled off some great performances spearheaded by talisman Khama Billiat who gave the team balance and shape especially while going forward.

Billiat was just above average but not to his normal standards as he seemed struggling a little bit, probably the stage seemed big for him.

Liverpool star Mohamed Salah (M) being stopped by the Zimbabweans, Egypt won 1-0

With a little bit of nervousness, the warriors were unsettled in the opening stages of the game but gradually gained momentum as the game progressed.

Eventually, their lack of calmness paid off to the home side when Zimbabwe’s skipper Knowledge Musona recklessly lost possession granting Trezeguet the advantage.

The Salah effect took coarse when the Zimbabweans lost shape off the ball by closing his operation zone leaving too much space on the left wing.

Zimbabwe gave too much respect to the hosts by sitting back but when they opened up in the second half, the West Bromwich defender Ahmed Hegazi and his defense mechanism made Karuru, Billiat, and Musona very uncomfortable.

Trezeguet (7) scored the only goal of the game as Egypt narrowly beat Zimbabwe 1-0.

Despite Zimbabwe having equal numbers in the middle of the park, Arsenal midfielder Mohamed Elneny bossed the midfield.

Less work rate off the ball especially not pressing Egypt upfront and giving their back-line time on the ball and enabling them to initiate attacks which always ended up in Zimbabwe’s box needs to be addressed.

The Zimbabwe Fullbacks lacked the overrides as they were not involved in attacks, all they did was defend allowing the Egyptians to take advantage and pile more pressure through flanks. This saw the Egyptian Fullbacks on the attack crossing balls into the box time after time.

The concentration of Zimbabwe’s Custodian Edmore Sibanda on a number of occasions saved them from conceding more goals.

Zimbabwe lost with dignity, something that will boost their confidence ahead of their second match against Uganda Cranes on June 26th.
