Playing at their maiden Africa Cup of Nations, Madagascar registered a historical 2-0 win over Nigeria at the Alexandria stadium in Alexandria, Egypt on Sunday.
Madagascar did not only win the game but the victory took the debutants through to the knockout stages of 2019 Total Africa Cup of Nations as group B winners on seven points.
Goals by Lalaina Nomenijanahary in the 13th minute and another from Charles Carolus Andria in the 52nd minute ensured that Madagascar have made history at their maiden tournament.
Prior to this game, Nigeria who had advanced to the Knockout stages needed just a single point to finish as group B leaders.
A defensive error by Leon Balogun gave away the first goal to Lalaina and Andria’s free kick deflected off Wilfried Ndidi’s shoulder for the second goal putting the mediocre in a much comfortable zone.
Though the Super Eagles possessed the ball for nearly the entire game, they could barely do nothing as the Barea capitalized from the little chances they had hence emerging victors.
Equatorial Guinea also thrashed ten men Burundi 2-0 in the other game of group B finishing third on four points hence keeping their chances of going through to the knockout stages alive.
As it stands Guinea tops the log of the best third-placed teams and there are higher chances of them securing a place in the last 16 stage of the competition.
