After surprising several spectators by making it to the knockout stages of the 2019 Total Africa Cup of Nations in their debut appearance, Madagascar are hungry for more.
The Island nation is ready to continue with that run by knocking two-time champions DR Congo out when the two sides meet on Sunday July 7th at Alexandria Stadium.
The Nicolas Dupuis coached side are motivated ahead of this tie with their ultimate target being a win against The Leopards.
“We’ve already sprung up a surprise and we’ll try to do the same thing again against DR Congo, Dupuis said in the pre-match press conference.
“I trust my team will put in a great performance. We are happy to be here, to have this strong game against a very good opponent like DR Congo,” he added.
Madagascar topped group B with seven points, after two wins against three-time champions Nigeria and fellow new comers Burundi plus a draw against West African side Guinea.
This made them the first debutant team in the history Nations Cup to qualify for the knockout stage since Cape Verde did the same in 2013.
Meanwhile, DR Congo qualified as one of the best third placed teams after finishing with three points in group A.
They lost their first two games with a 2-0 score against Uganda and Egypt respectively, but they revived their qualification chances with a huge 4-0 win over Zimbabwe in their last group game.
When the two sides met in the 2017 Nations Cup qualifiers, DR Congo shattered Madagascar with a mammoth 8-2 win on aggregate.
Should Madagascar win this tie, they will become the first debuting team to remain unbeaten in their first four games at the Nations Cup since Libya in 1982.
