AFCON 2019: Michael Olunga humbles Taifa Stars with a brace

It was a Michael Olunga brace that ensured Kenya picked their first win at the 2019 Total Africa Cup of Nations in the 3-2 win over Tanzania at June 30th Stadium on Thursday.

Saimon Msuva scored for Tanzania before Michael Olunga equalised, Mbwana Samatta gave Tanzania the lead again three minutes to the break.

Johanna Omolo brought Kenya level gain, Olunga stole the show with ten minutes left on the clock.

Both teams showed hunger and character, desperate to pick their first win of the campaign after losing to Tunisia and Algeria in their opening games

It’s Tanzania who went up early in the game Tanzania was ahead after just four minutes, Musa picked up Samatta who created his own space before shooting straight at Patrick Matasi.

The ST George custodian in Ethiopia made the save only in the way of Msuva who tapped home with ease.

When it seemed like both teams were done for the first half, Kenya were gifted by Aishi Salum Manula in the Tanzanian goal.

Off an Ayub Timbe free kick, Manula lost his grip before the ball bounced off his defender Erasto Nyonyi, Olunga volleyed it home.

It didn’t take long for Tanzania to get back into the lead, committed through the Kenyan defence before shooting past the advancing Matasi, 2-1 Tanzania led going into the break.

Kenya pushed for an equalizer at the start of the second stanza, the endless pressure had Tanzania succumb as Omolo headed home unmarked in the 61st minute despite Tanzania having close to five players in the 18-yard box.

The two couldn’t be separated until the 79th minute, Eric Omondi’s solo run from his own half found Olunga well positioned, the former Gor Mahia striker found space in the tightest angle to give Kenya the lead.

Kenya are now on three points just like their last group opponents Senegal while the loss might have sent Tanzania packing, they will a need miracle against Algeria in their last group game.
