AFCON 2019: Mixed emotions as Middendorp quashes Khune’s AFCON hopes

By Peter Tabu

Any nation especially a footballing one would want to have their best player available for major tournaments. Others go a step further to take the injured players along with hope that they can miraculously be fit.

Such is the situation Kaizer Chiefs and Bafana Bafana skipper and first choice Goalkeeper Itumuleng Khune finds himself in.

Capped 91 times for South Africa, Khune was ruled out for the rest of the season with a shoulder injury, missing 17 matches in all competitions in the process.

But many hoped he would be fit for the 2019 Total Africa Cup of Nations, it seemed that way until Chiefs coach Ernest Middendorp threw a spanner in the works revealing Khune was still far from being fit and in time for the AFCON.

Asked about Khune’s state of fitness after Chiefs’ 1-1 Absa Premiership draw with Golden Arrows at FNB Stadium on Tuesday night, Middendorp retaliated.

“Seriously‚ let’s be honest‚ today is nearly the end of April‚ and until now he has not even trained with any ball involved at all.”

“But there is no chance‚ 100 percent‚ if somebody dreams about having Itu Khune into Afcon‚ where he is not even at training. Sorry‚ it is totally unserious‚ it is dishonest.”

“And secondly‚ he should really make it happen to be very concentrated and clear-structured to prepare himself to have a good start of the [2019-20] season.

Middendorp’s comments have been received with mixed emotions from the public with other South African media outlets indicating other players have been summoned after a long injury layoff. One, in particular, is the Sowetan Editorial which highlighted Khune’s importance.

“We are saying that Khune remains SA’s number one goalie. Even without game time but fully recovered, Khune could still provide the much-needed cover between the sticks.”

“With all due respect to Darren Keet (10 caps) and Ronwen Williams (six caps), the duo don’t have Khune’s experience at this level. In any case, Baxter has shown that he’s not shy to call up players who have just recovered from injury.”

“Bongani Zungu and Keagan Dolly were called up for the Afcon qualifier against Libya recently despite the fact that they both missed more than 20 matches for French sides Amiens and Montpellier respectively” reads part of the excerpt.”

Bafana Bafana who are looking to add to their only AFCON title they won in 1996 are pooled in group D along with Ivory Coast, Morocco and Namibia.
