AFCON 2019: Miya in perfect form for Cranes duty

By Brian Aheebwa

Being one of the most successful players on the national team, Uganda cranes and HNK Gorica forward Farouk Miya has struggled with inconsistent performances at club level.

But as the 2019 Total Africa Cup of Nations gets closer Miya could have found his scoring boots yet again.

The 2015 FUFA Airtel Footballer of the year scored once and assisted twice as HNK Gorica beat Lokomotiva Zagreb 3-2 in the final game of the Croatian top tier league.

Miya and HNK Gorica finished the season fifth collecting 59 points on the 10 team log after 36 rounds of games

Miya has had 30 appearance out of the 36 for the Croatia outfit managing only five goals and assists

This may turn out not be enough stat for a player of his calibre and a trophy chasing club like Gorica but a flashback to the tough times he had in Belgium with Standard Liege and Royal Excel Mouscron.

Miya’s climax to the season was perfect timing as far Uganda Crane’s preparations for AFCON are concerned.

The striker has been at the forefront of Uganda Crane’s recent performance securing Uganda’s ticket to Gabon in 2017 after a 38 year long wait. He finished the campaign with four goals

The Talisman also scored thrice in the 2019 AFCON qualification campaign which handed the Cranes an instant return to AFCON.

He will join the rest of the Uganda Cranes teammates in Abu Dhabi in preparation for the 2019 AFCON finals that will be hosted by Egypt.

With the return of Kizito Luwagga, remarkable season performances from Emmanuel Okwi and Patrick Kaddu and now Farouk Miya picking form, its likely Uganda Cranes will have a sharp front line in Egypt.
