Minds are so far working for Nigeria head coach Gernot Rohr at the 2019 Total Africa Cup of Nations ahead of his team’s semi-final tie against Algeria on Sunday at Cairo International Stadium.
Before Nigeria played the then defending champions Cameroon at the round of 16, he dubbed them favourites as his team went on to win the tie 3-2 to book a date with South Africa who had defeated hosts Egypt 1-0 at the same stage.
“South Africa beat Egypt who were number one favourite, that made them favourites,” Rohr said in the pre-match press conference.
“Now we beat them and became one of the favourites, we are playing against Algeria, the best team in the group stage and the results are there to show, they are favourites and maybe we are second favourites,” he added.
Until their 4-3 triumph on post kicks over Ivory Coast at the quarterfinal stage, Algeria had scored nine goals and conceded none, they scored their tenth in the game but they also conceded their first in the tournament.
With four clean sheets in five games, Algeria take on a Nigerian side that has conceded a goal in three of their five games. They have conceded five times much as they have clean sheets against Burundi and Guinea to show off.
“After our performance against Cameroon and South Africa, I believe we are in a position to win this match, we just need to avoid the mistakes against a very good side,” Rohr noted.
Nigeria and Algeria have four titles between them, the former last won the competition in 2013 in South Africa before going on to miss the last two editions while Algeria are chasing a maiden title since 1990.
