It’s always a difficult time in every entity to faceoff with former employers. Morocco head coach Hervé Renard is faced with the above when his side takes on Ivory Coast in group D at the 2019 Total Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt on Friday, June 28th.
The Frenchman won his second Nations Cup title with Ivory Coast in 2015 after he had won his maiden with Zambia in 2012, he joined Morocco in 2016.
Both Morocco and Ivory Coast were pooled in group C at the 2017 AFCON edition in Gabon and Renard’s charges inflicted immediate misery to his former bosses Ivory Coast with 1-0 victory.
Just like in 2017, Morocco and Ivory Coast are pooled in the same group that is group D at this year’s continental football showpiece.
In their title defence at the 2017 finals in Gabon, Ivory Coast didn’t go past the group stages whereas the Atlas Lions exited at the quarter finals after they lost 1-0 to finalists Egypt.
Renard further guided Morocco to the 2018 World Cup in Russia after beating the Ivorians 2-0 in the qualifying game played in Abidjan.
In their opening games in Egypt, Morocco snatched a late 1-0 win over Namibia whereas Ivory Coast also beat South Africa with a slim 1-0 win in their opening games.
