Senegal will be playing in the final of the Nations Cup for the second time in their history when they take on Algeria on Friday July 19th at the Cairo International Stadium.
The last time they were there was in 2002, then they lost 3-2 to Cameroon on penalties after a goalless draw.
To reach the finals of the 2019 Total Africa Cup of Nations, Senegal defeated Tunisia 1-0 in extra time through a Dylan Bronn own goal in the 100th minute.
Senegal’s shirt number 10 Sadio Mane believes the Lions of Teranga are lucky to be in this position at the expense of an equally good Tunisian side.
“This kind of competition you need to be a little bit lucky and for sure we have been lucky but we are proud to be in the final,” Mane said after the game.
Tunisia were awarded a penalty in the 76th minute of the game but Ferjani Sassi’s effort was saved by Alfred Gomis, five minutes later, Senegal also won themselves a penalty, Henri Saivet’s effort was saved by Mouez Hassen.
“It was a difficult game but we expected that, if you are in a tournament, you want to win it and you must expect this type of game but we just stayed as a team and never gave up until the end,” Mane added.
Winning the Nations Cup with Senegal will put Mane in poll position for the 2019 Ballon d’Or together with the FIFA and African Footballer of the year awards.
