‘Chances’ and ‘luck’ are two words Denis Onyango can’t delete from his vocabulary, according to the Uganda Cranes, you need to take your chances if you are to win games, and you need the luck in tough times.
Uganda will need a combination of creating the chances and the luck to bury the chances when they face Senegal at the 2019 Total Africa Cup of Nations Round of 16 slated for July 5th at Cairo International Stadium.
“You need the chance and luck to win games, some teams have won the AFCON because of luck, if you don’t take your chances, you won’t win games,” Onyango said in the pre-match press conference on Thursday afternoon.
“We have played against quality players, just like the last game, quality and experience were combined and they took the game.”
“When you look at the stats (game against Egypt), we created chances but we just couldn’t bury them, we just need to focus and take our chances,” Onyango noted.
“It’s a knockout game, if you don’t take your chances you are punished, I believe my team is ready for that challenge,” the Mamelodi Sundowns shot-stopper noted.
Onyango and Cranes are coming off a sit-down strike over unpaid allowances and bonuses by FUFA that also had them miss the Tuesday training session, by the look of things, the matter is behind the team now.
“The team is focused on the game, otherwise, we would have parked the bags and gone back to Kampala.”
“The issues have been solved, everywhere there issues, unfortunately with us they were money issues, but we are focusing on the game right now and hope to make people back home happy.”
“We trained yesterday, and opened up the engine again, we are focused and determined on the game, otherwise, I wouldn’t be here,” Onyango added.
Onyango was substituted in the 2-0 defeat to Egypt with 20 minutes left on the clock which raised concerns over his health and fitness.
“I believe I am fit enough to face the next challenge tomorrow, in the last game I had a flue that affected my system, but I am medically ready if given a chance I will do what I have to do.”
