Hosts Cameroon, Group D leaders Nigeria, record champions Egypt and Guinea were all represented as CAF named the best performers of the group stage at the ongoing 2021 Africa Cup of Nations.
For scoring in each and every game in Group A, Cameroon captain Vincent Aboubakar was named both the best player and scorer.
Aboubakar netted a brace in each of Cameroon’s 2-1 and 4-1 victories against Burkina Faso and Ethiopia plus another in a 1-1 draw with Cape Verde.
Meanwhile, Nigeria head coach Augustine Eguavoen was named the best coach which is also self explanatory because he guided his side to maximum points, the only team to do so at this year’s tournament.
The Super Eagles who were pooled in Group D alongside Egypt, Sudan and Guinea Bissau, defeat them all, 1-0, 2-0 and 3-1 respectively.
Egypt’s goalkeeper Mohamed El Shennawy kept two clean sheets in his team’s 1-0 wins over both Sudan and Bissau and conceded once against Nigeria.
He as well made tremendous saves throughout the group stages and therefore named the best goalkeeper of the group stages.
Former Barcelona youngster Ilaix Moriba was outstanding as Guinea finished second in Group B on four points, one adrift of leaders Senegal who gathered five and was named the best young player of the group stages.
The recognitions come as motivation to these individuals and their teams heading into the knockouts, where they should put up similar performances in order to be named again at the end of the tournament.
