AFCON 2021: Moment of truth for McKinstry and his troops

By Football256 Team

It’s three years and eight months since the Cranes faced the Stallions at the Stade du 4-Août and in all sincerity, not much has changed in the Cranes ranks since.

Eleven players from the team that last faced Burkina Faso back in March 2016 under the stewardship of Milutin ‘Micho’ Sredojevic still make the cut under newbie, Jonathan McKinstry, as he plies to stamp his authority on the Cranes folklore.

Cranes may have been something of lesser knowns then but this time round, you’d expect a sterner approach from Stallions coach, Kamou Malo, as he will accord McKinstry’s side much more respect.

More so, after the Cranes put up a stellar performance in Ouagadougou when the sides last met only to be felled by a Jonathan Pitroipa penalty in the 58th minute after Onyango was adjudged to have fouled in the area.

On the other hand, the Cranes have got to devise means of dealing with a Burkinabe star studded cast of attacking talent in the form of Lyon wide man Bertrand Traore, Ajax forward Lassina Traoré, Aristide Bance, Eric Traoré and the ever green Pitroipa.

Cranes will take heart from the fact that six members of the squad summoned to take on Burkina Faso this time round started that decisive fixture in March 2016 and these include skipper Denis Onyango, defenders Murshid Jjuuko and Joseph Ochaya, midfielder Khalid Aucho and forwards Kizito Luwagga and Miya Farouk.

Uganda will be rooting to get one better over the Burkinabe as they’ll feel hard done by their last meeting in Ouagadougou but will at the same time take heart from their resilient performance that same evening that almost got them over the line.

With the core bulk of the squad still firmly intact, you expect a barrage of attacks from the Cranes but football doesn’t always turn out that way as there’s the sly element of surprise that we’ve all become very wary of.

Cranes will be buoyed by the fact that the core of the team has remained and shall thus look forward to earn their second win on the road in West Africa after beating Guinea Bissau 1-0 back in 2011.

With this being coach McKinstry’s second appearance in the dugout, many shall be hell bent on seeing what he really is made of and so there will be so many keen eyes paying attention to what he does and how he goes about his job.

This game will definitely go a long way in setting the tone for the game against Malawi in Kampala on Sunday.
