Nigeria sent a statement of intent as they progressed to the knockout phase with maximum points, after beating Guinea-Bissau 2-0 at the Stade Omnisport Roumde Adjia, Stadium on Wednesday.

Second half goals from Sadiq Umar and Troost Ekong ensured that the Super Eagles are the only side yet to lose a single point at this year’s edition.

Guinea-Bissau rocked the bottom with just a single point and as a result, they have been dumped out of the tournament.

Nigeria were absolutely dominant in terms of clear goal scoring opportunities in the first half but could not afford a goal to the good as they were limited to half chances.

Sadiq Umar’s 21st minute header from close range, after being set in by Kelechi Nwakali missed the target only by a few inches.

Nwakali, who had been brilliant all night, created another good chance for Kelechi Iheanacho but his decent strike was superbly denied by Guinea-Bissau goalkeeper Maurice Gomez.

Nigeria broke the deadlock ten minutes after restart and it required a good pass from Iheanacho to Sadiq Umar who was left with the easy job of tapping in.

Captain, William Troost Ekong doubled the Super Eagle’s lead with a simple tap in off the rebound after Moses Simon’s shot had hit the crossbar.

Moses Simon, who was a menace to the Guinea-Bissau backline nearly put his name on the scoresheet in the last moments of the game, but his effort narrowly missed the target.

Nigeria, who are now the only side to pick maximum points at the Cameroon edition, now await their knockout opponent as they look to take their fourth Cup in history.
