African reigning champions Algeria tested themselves and comfortably won against four-time winners, Ghana in a pre-AFCON friendly, even without their star player Riyad Mahrez.

The Manchester City winger was not in the matchday squad as the Desert Warriors defeated the Black Stars 3-0 at the Education City Stadium in Qatar on Wednesday.

However, there is nothing to worry about from the North African nation faithful, their captain was simply rested and will lead their searching for a double when the coveted tournament gets underway on Sunday, January 9 in Cameroon.

Napoli’s Adam Ounas, an own goal from Jonathan Mensah and a strike from Lyon’s Islam Slimani, is how Djamel Belmadi’s charges managed the three goals.

Ounas netted the first goal of the game as early as the eighth minute, Mensah scored in his net in the 74th minute before Slimani sealed it in the 79th minute.

Therefore, the holders of the AFCON head to Cameroon with their confidence sky high whilst, on the other hand, the Ghanaians were handed a reality check.

Algeria is pooled in Group E alongside Ivory Coast, Equatorial Guinea and Sierra Leone and kickoff with the latter on Tuesday, January 11.

Meanwhile, Ghana are in Group C with Morocco, Gabon and Comoros. The Black Stars get their campaign underway against Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s Gabon on Friday 12.
