Twelve Tunisia players have tested positive for COVID-19, messing all preparations for their Africa Cup of Nations final fixture against Gambia at Limbe Stadium in Cameroon this Thursday.

Key player Wabhi Khazri who dispatched Mauritania with a double of the four goals in their second group game will dearly be missed for this crunch fixture.

However, right-back Mohamed Drager has recovered from the virus and Tunisia are hoping that five other players who have been positive since the start of the tournament, will test negative before Thursday’s game.

“This evening (Wednesday), in training, we had 16 players present and the rest absent due to COVID-19 contamination,” said Tunisia’s football federation on its social media platforms.

“After Tuesday’s tests, they revealed the contamination of Ali Maaloul, Aymen Dahmen, Ghailene Chaalali, Mohamed Ali Ben Romdhane, Wahbi Khazri, Ali Jemal and Mohamed Amine Ben Hmida who have been isolated from the group.”

Despite all the growing tension in the camp of the North Africans, Tunisia, the 2004 winners, need to at least draw their final Group F match to be sure of qualification for the last 16.

The Carthage Eagles bounced back from their controversial opening 1-0 loss to Mali, when the referee blew the final whistle early, by thrashing Mauritania 4-0 in their second game.

Tunisia coach Mondher Kebaier has a huge task upon him to put away Gambia to guarantee progress to the round of 16.
