Ghana captain Andre Ayew scored in the first half of his side’s encounter with Gabon to give the Black Stars hope of reaching the knockout stage of the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations.

However, their chances of staying in Cameroon beyond the group stages were dealt a major blow following the Panthers’ 87th minute equalizer through Jim Allevinah.

The four time AFCON champions who lost their first game to Morocco, find themselves on just a point in Group C and will need to beat Comoros if there is to be a chance of qualifying and Ayew believes they will.

“We are Ghana and we shall win our last group game against Comoros and go through,” the 32 year old told the media after the game.

The Al Sadd player was also not happy with how Gabon conducted themselves in the buildup to their equalizer.

Ghana had both a player down in midfielder Daniel-Kofi Kyereh and possession and they played the ball out in a spirit of fair play.

However, the ‘Brazilians’ did not return the ball to them as they expected and instead, they started it to themselves and went ahead and scored, something that angered the Ghanaians.

“It was very pety of them, but then that is how it is with small teams,” Ayew threw a jibe.

“We put the ball out of play, and it is fair play in football to give the ball back. Had they done that they would not have scored. They did not have many chances,” he noted.

When the referee Lahlou Benbraham blew fulltime at the Ahmadou Ahidjo Stadium, Kouekong on Friday, the Black Stars were frustrated and turned chaotic.

During the scuffle, Ghana’s striker Benjamin Tetteh threw double punches in the face of Gabon’s forward Aaron Boupendza, an act that earned him a red card.

Action in Group C will resume on Tuesday, January 18 for the final group games. Ghana who are third on one point will play rock bottom Comoros, targeting nothing but a win.

In the other game, it will be a fight for who finishes top of the group when leaders Morocco who are on six points take on second-placed Gabon who are on four points.
