With the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations set to enter the final round of games in the group stages, Zimbabwe and Mauritania are the first two teams to be confirmed out of the tournament with a game to spare.

Zimbabwe and Mauritania are amongst the four teams yet to register a single point in Cameroon. The others are Ethiopia and Comoros who are also living just by a thread.

However much there are four slots in the knockouts reserved for the four best third placed teams, Zimbabwe and Mauritania can not afford them and all they are waiting for is to play their last games and exit Cameroon.

Mauritania were thrashed 4-0 by Tunisia on Sunday putting the final nail into their coffin given that they had already lost 1-0 to debutants Gambia in their opener.

Pointless and rock bottom of Group F, the Lions of Chinguetti can not catch both Mali and Gambia who are joint top on four points with only a game left.

Even though they beat Mali and Tunisia who are on three points in third placed lose to Gambia, head coach Didier Gomes Da Rosa’s charges have already lost when it comes to head to head with the Eagles of Carthage.

In Group B, Zimbabwe as well find themselves in a similar situation, on zero points after two games, the Warriors can not reach Senegal and Guinea who tied on four points.

Malawi is placed third on three points and they have already beaten the Southern Africans meaning that is the end of the road for the latter.

On the other hand, Ethiopia and Comoros also have their tournaments certainty over, though mathematically, they are still in the race for the best four third placed teams, who knows, they might pull off a miracle?.

Ethiopia who are pooled in Group A have lost all their two opening games and are bottom of the group standings.

In the same group, hosts Cameroon have already qualified on six points while Burkina Faso and Cape Verde are waiting on three points each.

The East African side can only make it three points if they win against Burkina Faso, hoping that Cape Verde can beat Cameroon.

If all goes as mentioned above, Ethiopia will move up to third place given that they will have beaten Burkina Faso when it comes to head to head.

However, still, they will have to wait and see if they are amongst the four best third placed teams, that is how miraculous it should be for them.

At the tournament, there are two debutants in Gambia and Comoros, the former are a surprise package with a step closer to knockouts while the latter have failed to impress.

Comoros have already been beaten by Morocco and Gabon who occupy first and second place on six and four points respectively in Group C.

They can only finish above third placed Ghana who are on a single point that is if they defeat them when they face off on Wednesday.

If the above happens, Comoros will also wait to see their name appears amongst the four best third placed teams, which also requires a miracle.

Ghana who are on one point in Group C, Sierra Leone and Algeria who are on two and one respectively in Group E, Guinea Bissau and Sudan are on one apiece in Group B, are the teams that find themselves in a do or die situation.
