Hippos’ head coach Jackson Mayanja has confirmed two Uganda Premier League friendly matches ahead of the 2023 U20 Africa Cup of Nations.

The former Ugandan International made it public knowledge that the Hippos will twice play against BUL FC before later taking on KCCA FC.

“Tomorrow (Wednesday), we shall play BUL, play it again on Saturday before taking on KCCA,” said the tactician following their 1-0 win against Big League side Jinja North United in a friendly on Monday.

He also highlighted the competition in camp but revealed the 50-man squad will be trimmed this week.

“There’s no pressure as everyone is categorized in their preferred role. So, there is competition yet everyone has to fight for their place in the team.”

“We are at the moment working more on the players’ fitness levels, as we slightly touch on the tactical aspects.”

“Most of the players lack fitness as they were not playing for their clubs, while some are talented but are unattached. So we have to help them physically.”

The continental showdown is slated for Egypt in February, with each semi-finalist assured of a spot in the 2023 World Cup in Indonesia.
