Uganda national under-17 football team the Cubs got their first win at the 2019 Total U17 Africa Nations Cup after they defeated Tanzania 3-0 at the Benjamin Mkapa National Stadium on Wednesday.
The Cubs scored two first-half goals through Andrew Kawooya in the 16th minute and Ivan Asaba in the 28th before Najib Yiga made it 3-0 in the 77th.
The massacre terminated Tanzania’s any chance of making it to the semifinals of the tournament and in the process became the first team to be eliminated with a game to play.
With the win, the Samuel ‘Paa’ Fabin Kwesi coached side increased their chances of advancing to the semifinals of the tournament and booking a slot at the forthcoming 2019 FIFA U-17 World Cup in Brazil later this year.
Unlike their 1-0 defeat against Angola, this time round the Cubs were lethal enough in front of the goal.
Out of the five shots they had on target, three of them found the back of the net, Tanzania created four but couldn’t convert any.
Uganda now need to win their remaining game against Nigeria who already made it into the semifinals of the tournament and booked their slot in the 2019 FIFA U-17 World Cup.
Tanzania’s last game against Angola will be just for formality for the Serengeti Boys but Angola needs maximum points from it as they compete for the remaining slot in group A with Uganda.
The win was a huge achievement for Uganda whose World Cup dream remains a priority, if achieved it will be the first Ugandan football team to achieve the feat.
