Cameroon football legend Rigobert Song is moments away from being named the new head coach for the Indomitable Lions by former national teammate and FA President, Samuel Eto’o.

Song could become head coach Francisco Conceicao’s replacement who might be fired after failing to win the recent 2021 AFCON.

Despite their status as the host country, Cameroon failed in the semi-finals. The consolation was the bronze medal they obtained after winning third-place playoff against Burkina Faso.

In his letter sent on Friday evening, to the members of the executive committee of the federation, Eto’o asked for additional time to decide on the next coach.

However, according to an online publication, www.jeauneafrique.com, Eto’o’s preference is Song, for the job.

The latter is one of the greatest players in the history of Cameroon, he participated in the conquest of two victorious Africa Cups (2000 and 2002).

The 45-year-old is, however, short of coaching experience having only led the Olympic selection of Cameroon and was also the coach of the Cameroon U-23 national team, previously.

Song also coached Cameroon at the 2018 CHAN tournament in Morocco as they finished bottom of Group D with just one point from three games.

In case Song is appointed into the role, his main mission will be to guide the Indomitable Lions to the World Cup in Qatar 2022.

They will take on Algeria in March in a two-legged tie to decide who makes the five African representatives at the biggest global football showpiece.
