Uganda Cranes midfielder Allan Okello has advised that former captain Dennis Onyango’s shirt (18) be retired at the national team as a sign of respect and appreciation.
This follows Onyango’s announcement that he had retired from national duty on Monday.
The Paradou AC player in his tweet where he congratulated Onyango for his service highlighted what a true leader and a motivator he was.
“Captain, leader, names cannot say it all. (I am) just waiting for the shirt 18 to be retired,” Okello tweeted.
“I cannot believe we are not going to see the motivator anymore. I just wish you the best captain,” the tweet continued.
The 20-year-old is among a generation of players that have drawn inspiration from the 35-year-old veteran who garnered 75 caps in a 16-year career.
Okello is as well among Onyango’s former teammates that have congratulated him for the glittery career.
Among them is Farouk Miya who highlighted how much of an example and leader that the now former captain has been.
Among Others to celebrate him include Murushid Juuko, Khalid Aucho, Allan Kateregga, who all praised Onyango’s spirit, grit and service on their respective social media handles.
It remains to be seen what the FUFA administration and technical team will decide on retiring the shirt, one he has shined in every time occasion demanded.
