Kampala Capital City Authority Football Club talisman Allan Okello has been voted as the winner of the 2019 FUFA Player of the year.
Okello beat KCCA teammate, defender Mustafa Kizza and Proline FC playmaker Bright Anukani to the award, which was celebrating its fifth year.
The 19-year-old was in November named as the 256 Footballer of the year and has enjoyed quite a season, guiding KCCA to the Uganda Premier League and the 2019 CECAFA Club championship, for the first time in 30 years.
He was instrumental as Uganda sealed a fifth consecutive qualification for the 2020 African Nations Champions, scoring in the return leg against Burundi in the qualifiers.
Okello earned his debut with the senior national team, coming on as a second-half substitute as Uganda defeated Malawi last month. He has carried that form to the CECAFA Senior Challenge Cup, scoring twice as they defeated Somalia.
A nervous Okello who came second behind winner Moses Waiswa in 2018, thanked his coach and fellow players at KCCA for always pushing him and giving him the platform to flourish.
“Am feeling so excited today, it’s a great honour for me to finally win this award. I was on the podium last year and came second, but it’s great that I win it this year,” Okello said.
“I want to thank my coach Mike Mutebi for giving me the opportunity and always pushing me to perform at my best, I also want to thank Coach Abdallah Mubiru for spotting my talent at Kibuli,” He added.
Okello then appreciated his teammate Kizza, with whom they have grown through the ranks at KCCA since they joined the club’s academy.
“It has been a good fight against some of the top talents my brother Mustafa Kizza and Bright Anukani, I want to congratulate you as well. It’s a great honour to be playing with you (Kizza) and I hope for better in the future,”
He then dedicated the award to his late mother. “I want to dedicate this award to my late mother, but then appreciate my father for not giving up on me and raising us up. Thank you.” He continued.
On top of receiving the accolade, Okello will drive home in a brand new car, plus a cash prize money from FUFA.
