Youngster Salena Allibhai has expressed huge delight at the prospect of making her first national team (the Crested Cranes) appearance in the forthcoming CECAFA Women Championships.

The 17-year-old midfielder features for Belgian side KAA Gent, but she only received her first national team call-up a week back.

“I’m excited to be here as it is my first time representing Uganda,” Allibhai told the media on Tuesday.

“I’m so grateful for the opportunity (to represent Uganda). As a midfielder, I’m very calm on the ball, technical and I’m able to dissolve pressure,” she added.

From Ottawa in Canada, Allibhai has previously played for Futuro Soccer Academy (Hoffenheim, Baden-Wurttember Germany), before the Gent stint.

She is born to a Ugandan father, who moved to North America (Canada) as a juvenile. However, not too much is known of her mother.

Uganda plays as the hosts at the 2022 CECAFA edition, and Allibhai is poised to leave a mark in the games that will begin on May 22 – June 5.

Besides Uganda, the other participants include Burundi, Djibouti, Ethiopia, South Sudan, Tanzania, Rwanda, and Zanzibar.

The regional tournament will be used as a build-up for the Pearl of Africa to the July Women Africa Cup of Nations, another opportunity for Allibhai to showcase her abilities.
