Real Salt Lake’s assistant general manager Tony Beltran believes Uganda Cranes left-back Aziz Kayondo will reach the potential heights of his career.
The defender was announced as a new signing at Real Monarchs on Wednesday. Real Monarchs operates as the reserve team of Major League Soccer side Real Salt Lake.
“We believe this is just the beginning of what he can accomplish,” Beltran was quoted by the Real Monarchs club website.
“And are excited about the potential heights he can reach with Real Monarchs and our organization.”
“Kayondo is a talented, young defender who has quickly risen to a high pedigree in African football, both with his former club and the Uganda national team,” Beltran noted.
Kayondo’s MLS NEXT Pro professional contract is pending league approval. Kayondo leaves StarTimes Uganda Premier League side Vipers SC after four years, he won the 2020 Stanbic Uganda Cup.
He was integral as the Uganda U20 side the Hippos reached the final of the U20 Africa Cup of Nations in Mauritania before they were beaten 2-0 by Ghana.
Kayondo went on to be named in the tournament’s best eleven, the only Ugandan player to make the team besides top scorer Derrick Kakooza.
The left-back earned his Cranes senior team debut during the World Cup qualifiers against Rwanda in Kigali coming on as a substitute for Isaac Muleme.
Kayondo was impressive throughout 2021 and he made the three-man shortlist for the FUFA Male Player of the Year Award, alongside Express FC’s Erick Kambale and his teammate Bobosi Byaruhanga, an award which was won by the latter.
By the time of his leaving, the marauding left-back had not featured for the Kitende-based outfit in the second round of the ongoing campaign.
Reports had indicated that Kayondo and former KCCA FC’s Musa Ramadhan were Czech Republic side MFK Vyskov bound but the former has completed a move to America instead.
Kayondo’s new club Real Monarchs features in the newly established MLS NEXT Pro and their next game will be against St Louis City Two.
