Former Uganda Cranes captain Ibrahim Sekagya has been elevated from assistant coach to interim head coach at New York Red Bulls II.
Sekagya succeeds Gary Lewis who has parted ways with the club due to a run of poor results.
“We would like to thank Gary for his time with the club and wish him the best in all of his future endeavors,” said Red Bulls Academy Director Sean McCafferty.
Sekagya will be in charge of New York Red Bulls for the remainder of the season in the USL Championship.
It will not be the first time that Sekagya performs the role of head coach at New York Red Bulls, he has done it before in three matches during his eight-year stay at the club.
New York Red Bulls had gone 15 games minus winning, a streak that left head coach Lewis out of his job.
Sekagya’s first game in charge during this span will be away from home against Louisville City FC on Saturday, July 9.
The former New York Red Bulls defender retired in 2015 after making 33 appearances with the club.
Prior to that, he spent six seasons playing for Red Bull Salzburg, where he won three Austrian Bundesliga titles and an Austrian Cup championship.
