After announcing her exit from Portuguese side Benfica recently, South African striker Thembi Kgatlana has joined Spanish side Eibar for the forthcoming 2020/2021 season.
Kgatlana abruptly ended her two-and-half-year deal with the Portuguese side last week and joins the Spanish side on a free transfer.
The 2018 African Women Nations Cup (AWCON) top scorer and Most Valuable Player (MVP) comes in as a squad spice to Jon Gallego’s side,
Eiber will undertake their first top-flight season since 2011 after achieving promotion to the Spanish Primera Iberdrola – Spain’s top-flight division.
“Thembi Kgatlana has become the latest reinforcement of the Eibar Sports Society women’s first team,” the club announced on its website.
After experiencing a colourful 2018, where she was crowned as the African Female Player of the Year, Kgatlana continued her fairytale story by playing a pivotal role as South Africa’s Banyana Banyana qualified for their first ever Women World Cup.
At the tournament finals held in France in 2019, she went ahead and scored her nation’s first and only goal in Women World Cup history.
The South African midfielder has previously played for Houston Dash in the United States, Beijing BG Phoenix in China in 2019 and Benfica FC where she has played since January, making just three appearances and scoring three goals for the club.
At Eibar, Kgatlana will play alongside Nigerian female striker Charity Adule as the side strives to become a regular feature in the Spanish top division.
South Africa continues to export female talent to Europe after Banyana Banyan captain Janine Van Wyk also completed her move to Scottish club Glasgow FC last week.
