Before the game between Mbarara City FC and Kitara FC at Kakyeka Stadium in the Big League on Thursday, the two sides were second and first on the 16-team log respectively.
Setting up the biggest fixture of the first round in Uganda’s second division in the battle for the top spot.
By the end of the game, the hosts were victorious courtesy of a 1-0 win a goal that was scored by Henry Kitegenyi in the 81st minute.
The victory ensured that the Ankole Lions maintained their unbeaten run and after 10 games in the Big League they remain the only team yet to test defeat.
But most importantly, Mbarara leapfrogged Kitara to go top of the log with 22 points compared to the latter’s 20 points after both sides played the same number of games.
Mbarara are seeking an immediate return to the Uganda Premier League having been relegated last season alongside Police FC and Tooro United FC.
Mbarara, Kitara, and NEC FC currently occupy the three promotional positions with Kitara and NEC level on 20 points and it is the former that is positioned second with a better goal difference.
NEC picked up a 5-0 victory over Northern Gateway FC in Bugolobi thanks to Julius Walugembe’s hat trick and two other goals from Julius Kazibwe and Marvin Kavuma.
The Cops are closely watching on from the fourth position with 17 points following their 3-0 win over Soroti City FC at Kavumba.
Herman Wasswa, Emmanuel Mugume, and Diego Semugera scored first-half goals which were important for Police.
