Former Uganda Cranes head coach, Bobby Williamson insists that Ugandan coaches are not yet at the level of ably handling the national team despite growing calls for a Ugandan to take over as the next Uganda Cranes coach.

The Uganda Cranes head coach position is currently vacant following the sacking of Johnathan McKinstry late last week.

A number of Ugandans have over time called for a local coach to take over but the Williamson has failed to completely buy into the obsession.

Speaking exclusively to Football256, the Scot who handled the Cranes for five years between 2008 and 2013 highlighted that a local coach would face even more challenges than their foreign counterparts despite a host of them having the potential.

“There are guys who are confident in their abilities,” said the former Harambee Stars’ coach.

“The problems they face is the politics and tribalism. None of that affected me because I never had a tribe and never listened or read what the media had to say.”

“Local coaches cannot avoid that which makes the job very difficult but anyway why the obsession with local coaches?” questioned Williamson in awe.

“Uganda should appoint the best they can afford, whether European, Ugandan or from wherever just get the best for the country,” he said.

Williamson further pointed out that in case a foreigner is appointed, a trusted Ugandan should be his deputy to help them learn the culture and other dynamics as well.

In the search for the office’s next occupant, focus will be on FUFA about whether a Ugandan will take over or the foreigner-trend will continue for some more time.
