Burundi seal maiden appearance at AFCON finals

By Peter Tabu

When the Confederation of African Football (CAF) announced the increase in the number of teams at the African cup of Nations from 16 to 24 teams, it was a case of nations that have never made an appearance at the showpiece to make a cause for themselves.

Something Burundi seemed to have done on Saturday afternoon in Bujumbura in front of a hungry and expectant crowd.

The small populated war-ravaged nation booked a spot at the 2019 Nations Cup finals after picking up a point in a one all draw against Gabon at home.

Cedric Amiisi scored for the hosts before Omar Ngando put the ball in his own net to level matters for Gabon.

The point was just enough to seal the ticket leaving Gabon nursing their own wounds as Arsenal forward Pierre Emerick Aubameyang didn’t seem to have brought along his scoring boots.

Burundi finish the 2019 qualification campaign on 9 points two ahead of third-placed Gabon and two behind table leaders Mali who are on 11 points.

Burundi’s qualification means East Africa will be represented by three nations for now after Uganda and Kenya already making it through.

Pending the outcome in Group L where Tanzania who are on five points tied with Lesotho have to win against table leaders Uganda to also qualify.

A loss for Tanzania with Lesotho or Cape Verde winning would send the Taifa Stars parking.

Teams that have already qualified: Egypt, Madagascar, Senegal, Morocco, Cameroon, Mali, Burundi, Algeria, Nigeria, Kenya, Ghana, Guinea, Ivory Coast, Angola, Mauritania, Tunisia, Guinea Bissau, Namibia, Uganda
